I joined the ePortfolio MOOC running begin Aug to end Sep. I will use this blog to reflect on my journey throughout this course. I decided to use WordPress because I haven’t used it much and I would like to learn more about it. I am hoping this course will make me find the time to explore it

Today I have read through the overview section and the Level 1 section. For the Level 1 challenges I have decided to explore Livebinders and spiderscribe – because these are the only 2 tools in the list that I haven’t used before. I have created my Livebinders account and added the EPcoplearnspace home page. I still need to learn lots more about this technology, so I intend to watch the demo video to get a handle on what else I can do with this tool. I haven’t created a spiderscribe account yet as I need to get to work on producing some tutorials for my students now, but I intend to come back as soon as I can and explore this mindmapping tool.

So far I’m find the information and resources great. I already had links to Dr Helen Barretts eportfolio resources on my ASK website (a website created to assist MAN3655 students to develop their own eportfolios to demonstrate their skills and knowledge for developing session plans and training program) and the JISC effective practice with ePortfolios.pdf. However, I really like the Visual planning diagram for ePortfolio students and I intend to add this to the web site (soon). I also had a quick look at the planning poplet which looks like it’s got some really interesting info & links on it. I will come back & explore it in more depth. So pleased the MOOC is creative commons and we have been given permission to “harvest” resources. I’ll be sure to acknowledge the source. I’m hoping to join the webinar on August but not sure about my work committments for this day/time yet.

Testing cbox – chat … humm that didn’t work will have to check it out later. It also didn’t work on Blogger, well it sort of did, the cbox chat displayed but it threw out the whole formatting for the web page. The only place I managed to get it working so far is on my Moodle site. Something to explore further when I get time.

Came across this twitter widget from Schools online which is supposed to display as a scrolling list of tweets. It advised – just copy and paste the html code into a webpage.

Well I tried that on this page

Created by Guide to Online Schools and it didn’t work.

WordPress removed the script as it thought it might be malicious. I tried it in Blogger and it did display but it also broke the css code for the page and put all the menus in strange places. I tried to put it in a google sites webpage – again, the script was removed. The only place I’ve got it to display and work correctly is in Moodle. Another tick for Moodle!

Introduce Yourself

Since you found your way to my blog dashboard…why don’t you leave a comment to introduce yourself !

I’m having problems embedding code using WordPress. It is not as easy as Edublogs! I’ve just copied and pasted the code from Frappr and voiceThread to both my blogs (comparing the 2 tools)

Edublog – easy. I just pasted code in & the images & links work fine.
WordPress – not so easy. As you can see above the Frappr code embedded the toolbar info, but not the map itself. And for voiceThread nothing appears.

I know, I know, I’m new to WordPress and I haven’t learnt my way around it yet (actually I haven’t done any of the tutorials, just jumped in and used it). I’m sure when I go looking I’ll find out how to insert the embed code correctly. However I’m also new to Edublogs (and haven’t done any of their tutorials either) but it worked fine there!

Exploring WordPress

I am exploring WordPress to evalute and compare it against other blogging tools. Up until now I have been using Blogger.

During the CCK08 course I noticed a lot of people using WordPress and it was voted the best blogging tool in the Top 25 Tools list on Jane Hart’s website so I thought I’d check it out.

I am also using Edublog to check out it’s features.
